The Fly of the Month

Griffith's Gnat

 
 The Griffith's Gnat is named after George Griffith, one of the original founders of Trout Unlimited.  Tie this fly as the original recipe in sizes #12-#18 and in floss bodies in sizes #18-#24.
 Recipe: (original)
Hook: Tiemco or equivalent sizes #12-#24
Thread: 6/0 black, 8/0 black hook #16 and below.  For floss bodies, match body color.
Body: Peacock (original) Foss bodies: ruby red, rusty brown, chocolate, olive, pale olive, muskrat, black yellow
Hackle: Grizzly palmered 4 - 8 turns along the body

Tying Instructions:
1. Debarb hook and mount thread behind eye and advance thread rearward to hook bend.
2. Tie-in the proper sized hackle at the bend and tie-in one or two turns of peacock.
3. Wind the peacock forward to behind the eye and tie-off with three wraps of thread.
4. Palmer the hackle forward in open wraps and tie-off.  Whip finish. Half hitch smaller flies.
