The Fly of the Month

Walts Worm

 
 What does this fly represent. Is it a Scud or a Sow Bug? Could it be a Cress Bug? Or is it a Case Caddis, Caddis Larvae or even a Mayfly Nymph. Well, Walt's Worm can represent any of these insects as well as numerous other nymphs and this is why this fly so effective. Its buggy and very easy to tie. It can also be tied with a bead head.

This fly is named after its creator Walt Young, two time Pennsylvainia fly-tying champion and his fly has produced great fishing in trout waters around the globe but there is no better place to fish it than our Georgia trout streams.

 Recipe:

Hook: Mustad 3906B or similar size # 8 - #18. Bead head size #10 - #18
Thread: Uni 8/0 Olive Dun
Weight: Lead or non-toxic wire. Be sure to use the appropriate size for the hook.
Dubbing: Dark Hare's such as HareLine #5Dark Hare's Ear.


Tying Instructions:
1. Mash down barb and paint the hook shank with thread from eye to bend.
2. Wrap lead wire in close wraps over the center 1/2 length of the hook shank.
3. Wrap thread forward building a ramp behind the lead wire wraps, forward over the lead wraps an build a thread ramp in front of the lead wraps.  Return the thread rearward covering the lead wraps with thread an return the thread to the hook bend.
4. Begin dubbing at the hook bend wrapping forward.  It is important to keep the dubbing sparse dubbing a little of the thread at a time.
5. Continue to dub and wrap forward to the eye creating a tapered body.  Wrap dubbing rearward creating a heavier mid-body and return forward to behind the eye keeping a nice tapered body.  Whip finish.
6. Using your dubbing brush or your bodkin pick out the dubbing creating a buggy body.
7. Using your tying scissors clip the long guard hairs slightly, keeping a shaggy body.  See photograph.

Go fishing

The bead head version should be tied on curved shank hooks. Be sure to keep the beads to the appropriate size.
